Our foodbank grew out of our 75th Celebrations. A large proportion of our volunteers have connections with our church. Over the last year, our church donated 390kg of food – a number of people in our church support the foodbank financially – and the volunteers give hours of their time.

A few facts you might like to know are (1) in the year 2017-2018 DSFB fed 1630 people – that compares with about 1200 in each of the preceding years. (2) The main cause for foodbank use that clients give us is Low income. (3) The next two main causes are Benefit Delays and Benefit changes. Numbers of single people in need are increasing, probably due to Income Support. Income Support will be extended to include families in the autumn – so we anticipate increased use of the foodbank.

These causes 'hide' a number of situations. Many clients need signposting to other agencies such as Citizens Advice and AgeUK to sort out financial, family or property concerns; many need emotional support; many need someone to talk to; some need 'tough love' – they need to do something for themselves to improve their situation, thereby enabling DSFB to provide further food.

Often in recent services, Gary has referred to Christian love, to caring for those in need, for looking beyond our physical walls. Foodbank is by no means the only way of doing this but it is a way that is helping many in our community. Urgent Foodbank Request

Thanks to everyone who has donated food to us but our client numbers have increased substantially in the last 2 weeks, with a lot more families using our services. As yet there is no clear pattern as to the cause of this.

Also, this week we have given out 82 Christmas boxes to people within our community who have been identified by our agencies as needing extra support over the Christmas holidays. These people range from pensioners to young families, single people to the homeless. Consequently our stocks have been depleted and we are in urgent need of the following items -

Tea bags - packets of 40/80,

Tinned fruit,

Tinned Potatoes and carrots,

Coffee - small jars,

Long life fruit juice,

Jars of pasta sauce,
